Our new park archive in the Presidio of San Francisco has literally dozens of 19th century plans and photos of Alcatraz, including ones showing the now-subterranean rooms of the Citadel. This is not the tunnels as featured in The Rock (they do not exist).

That depends on who you ask. There were five men who tried to escape and were never found. All were presumed dead.

Do you think Alcatraz was closed because of the brutality to prisoners?
That's a loaded question! No, I think there were many factors in the closing of Alcatraz.

Was there an electric chair/gas chamber at Alcatraz?
First let me say that I am not a law student or anything of the sort. To my knowledge, the death penalty is both assigned and carried out be each individual state. Since Alcatraz was a federal penitentiary, there was probably no death penalty sentences carried out there. Even if Alcatraz had an inmate on death row, that inmate would probably have been sent to San Quentin or Folsom State Prison for execution. For more infomation check out this site.

How do I contact the giftshop?
The bookstore on the island is as close as you'll get on-line. If you want that go to the National Parks Service page.
